Everyday Life <br>in Ancient Egypt
Topic(s):   Ancient Egypt

Daily life in ancient Egypt was different for different people. Poor people, servants and slaves mostly worked. Craftsmen, like carpenters or metalworkers, did their jobs. They told their helpers what to do. Men with more money took care of business. They had more time for entertainment.

Everyone liked to be clean. Egypt is hot, so ancient people had to wash up often. People with money had servants pour water on them in special bathing rooms. Others may have washed in a river or canal. Bowls of water could be used to wash up. Perfumed oils were used to take care of skin and make people smell better.

After a simple breakfast, men went to work. After lunch, it was very hot. Rich men might take a nap during the heat. Later, they might get together with friends to hunt or go to the beer halls. After dinner, they might have a party or spend time with their families. Farmers would work until sundown, eat dinner with the family, and go to bed.

Women worked around the house. The women and their servants, if they had any, cleaned. They ground grain into flour. They made beer and cooked. Some women went to work with their husbands.

Children played, helped around the house, or went to work with their fathers. Boys went to school if their parents could afford it. They learned to read and write so they could be scribes. Girls were taught to keep house by their mothers.
