A temperate forest is a biome covered with trees. Another name for a temperate forest is a deciduous forest. Most of the trees are hardwood trees. Hardwood trees have broad leaves. Some evergreens also grow there. The temperate forest has four seasons. They are winter, spring, summer and autumn.

A temperate forest has five different layers. The tallest hardwood trees make the top layer. That is called the canopy. Shorter trees make the understory layer. The shrub layer is closer to the ground. It is made of shrubs and bushes. Mosses grow on rocks and logs. This is called the herb layer. On the forest floor, dead leaves and twigs cover the ground.

Hardwood trees in the temperate forests lose their leaves in the winter. In spring the weather turns warm. Rain helps the leaves bloom. The warm weather helps the trees turn to green all summer. When the weather gets cooler the leaves turn beautiful colors. In winter, the leaves fall to the ground.

Temperate forests are important to people. Builders use the trees to make houses. People use hardwood trees to build furniture. The wood is used for heating homes. Paper comes from temperate forests. The paper is used to make books. Newspapers and magazines are also made from the paper. Fruits grow on trees in the forest. Some medicines come from the temperate forest trees.
