The freshwater biome is an area of water. It is low in salt. There are many different types of freshwater areas.

The freshwater biome includes ponds and lakes. They are found all over the earth. These wet areas can be small or very large. Lakes and ponds are isolated. This means they are separated from other water by land.

Lakes and ponds have a shore. They have a top layer, a deep area, and a bottom. The sun warms the top layer. It is cool near the bottom. Sometimes the water will freeze in the winter.

Rivers and streams are part of the freshwater biome. They are found everywhere. Where a river begins is called the headwater. A headwater can be a spring or lake. A headwater can even be snow melting from the mountains. The water in a river or stream is cool and clear. It flows quickly from the headwater.

The center of a river or stream becomes wider and slower. It finally flows slowly to a mouth. The rivers mouth can be a lake, another river or an ocean.

The freshwater biome also has wetlands. Some wetlands are called marshes. Others are swamps and bogs. Wetlands are not deep. They sometimes dry up during different seasons of the year.

The freshwater biome is important to people. Fish from the freshwater biome is used for food. Fresh water helps plants grow. People use fresh water for drinking and recreation.
