After learning how to read and write, Fillmore studied to be a lawyer. He then became a congressman for New York. Fillmore ran on the ticket with Zachary Taylor. Taylor and Fillmore won the election. Fillmore became the vice-president.

Millard Fillmore became president when Zachary Taylor died suddenly. While Fillmore was president, he and Abigail started the first library in the White House. It had over 4,000 books.

Millard and Abigail Fillmore worked hard to make the White House more modern. They put in a stove for cooking. Plumbers also put in the first White House bathtub with running water.
