A machine is an object that helps move things easier. Machines can change force and distance. A machine can also change the direction of a force. Force is the power or energy needed to move an object.

An inclined plane is a simple machine. It has a flat surface. One end of the inclined plan is higher than the other. The slanting surface rises or drops. It connects a lower level to a higher level.

You can use an inclined plane to move an object up or down. You can move an object down the inclined plane to a lower spot. Or you can move an object up the inclined plane to a higher place.

An inclined plane is used to lift a load to a higher spot with less force. Lifting a heavy object straight up can be very hard. An object on an inclined plane will move a longer distance, but less force is needed. Inclined planes make the work of moving things easier.
