Christ the Redeemer statue stands high above the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is atop a mountain named Corcovado. The mountain is 2,309 feet (over 700 meters) high. Visitors can reach the site by car, taxi, or train.
To build the statue, trains hauled pieces up the mountain. It was completed in 1931. Christ the Redeemer statue stands 125 feet (39 meters) high. It weighs 1145 tons (over 1,000,000 kilograms). The statue’s face is peaceful. Its arms are spread wide. They are 98 feet (30 meters) across. The statue can be seen from every part of the city. It is well lit at night.
The Catholic Church owns the statue. The church built a chapel at its base. It is used for weddings and baptisms. Visitors can see the entire city and its beaches from the base of the statue. It is a popular place. More than two million (2,000,000) people visit each year.
