A band is a group of people who play music. A band is named for the type of music it plays. A concert band plays old and light music. There are also rock bands, jazz bands, brass bands, and marching bands, just to name a few. Bands began in the early 1600s.
The concert band uses three instrument families. There are woodwind instruments like the flute and clarinet. There are brass instruments like the trumpet and tuba. There are percussion instruments like the drum and triangle.
A concert band has between 50 to 150 people. Each instrument section has some people playing the same instrument. One of those people is the leader of the section. There is also a leader of the whole band. This person is called the director. The director stands in front of the concert band. The director keeps the band together when the people play.
