John Adams had an important part in our country's history. After Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, Adams was asked to help edit it.
John Adams was the first vice-president elected to be president. He was also the first president to live in the Executive Mansion. The mansion only had six finished rooms when he and his wife, Abigail, moved in. John and Abigail had three sons. One son later became the sixth president.
While President, there was a war between Great Britain and France. Some Americans wanted to go to war to help France. Other Americans wanted to help Great Britain. Adams chose not to take sides. He kept America out of that war.
President Adams was not popular. He limited freedom of the press. Adams also made it harder to become a citizen.
John Adams retired to his farm in Massachusetts where he died on July 4th, 1826.
In his free time, he loved to take walks. He loved to fish. Adams loved to read. He was always looking for new books to add to his library.
