John Tyler grew up in Virginia. His family was rich. John was well educated. Tyler became a lawyer in 1809. He fought during the War of 1812. Tyler served in the Virginia Congress. He was the Governor of Virginia.

John Tyler became the vice-president in March of 1841. When President Harrison died suddenly, Tyler became president. Many people didn’t like this. The people did not elect Tyler. The people called him the acting president. Tyler never had a vice-president.

John Tyler’s first wife, Leticia, died in 1842. Soon after her death, Tyler married Julia. He was the first president to be married while living in the White House. Tyler and Julia had big parties in the White House. He enjoyed playing the violin. Julia Tyler played the guitar.

John Tyler had 15 children. Tyler had eight children with Leticia. He had seven children with Julia. That was more children than any other president.

While president, John Tyler admitted Texas as part of the United States.
