Atlanta has had three names. It was once called Terminus. It was also called Marthasville. Atlanta started as a busy railroad town. In a war between the states, Atlanta was set on fire. Railroad tracks and bridges were ruined. Atlanta had to build again.

Margaret Mitchell was a writer from Atlanta. She wrote a book about the war. It was called Gone with the Wind. The book won a special prize.

Visitors can visit the Cyclorama. It is a large painting that circles all around a huge room. It tells the story of the battle of Atlanta.

Atlanta is the capital of Georgia. The capital building in Atlanta was built to look like the capitol building of the United States. The roof of the capitol building is made from Georgia gold. The statue on the top is Miss Freedom. She holds a sword to honor soldiers.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta. He was a great leader for civil rights. The Nobel Peace Prize was given to Dr. King.

John Pemberton was a pharmacist. He invented Coca-Cola in Atlanta. You can learn more about soda pop at The World of Coca-Cola Museum.

The Summer Olympic Games were held in Atlanta in 1996. People came from all over the world. They wanted to see athletes win gold medals. Atlanta's newest sight is the Georgia Aquarium. It is the largest aquarium in the world!
