A coyote is known as the desert wolf. It is a member of the dog family. It has a round bushy tail. The coyote can be found throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico and Panama.

A coyote makes many sounds. It will howl, bark and yip mostly at night. It does this to keep track of other coyotes in the area. It hunts during the day and the night. The coyote has very good hearing and a great sense of smell. This helps it to find its prey. It will track its prey for 30 minutes before it pounces on it.

A female coyote can have babies at about one year old. She can have from two to 12 pups at one time. The female digs a home called a den. This is where she sleeps and has the pups.

The coyote is a very fast runner. It can run up to 40 miles an hour. It can also leap over an eight-foot fence.
