The Asiatic black bear lives on the continent of Asia. The bear lives in mountain forests. This bear has long fur. It has a white or tan colored spot on its chest. The front paws have sharp claws. These claws help the bear climb trees.

In the summer, the Asiatic black bear likes to eat berries, cherries, grasses, and even ants. In the fall, it climbs trees to get nuts. It can pick the nuts up from the forest floor, too. In the winter, the bear sleeps in a hollow tree or cave. It can hibernate for as long as five months.

The mother Asiatic black bear can have one to four cubs at a time. A cub is very small when it is born. It weighs less than a pound. It stays with its mother two or three years.

The Asiatic black bear likes to move from place to place. It does this to find its food. People are cutting down its forests to make farms. It is hard for the bear to find food. The Asiatic black bear is endangered.

Some people in China kill the bear for its gall bladder. The gall bladder is one of the bear’s body organs. It is used to make medicine.

The Asiatic black bear is also called other names: Moon bear, Asian bear, and the white-chested bear.
