The armadillo is known for the hard shell on its back. This shell protects the armadillo from predators. There is no shell to protect the armadillo’s belly or legs. Some armadillos can roll into a ball to protect themselves.

An armadillo has a nose, mouth, and claws that help it dig a burrow. A burrow is a deep hole in the ground. The armadillo can dig a burrow very quickly. The armadillo makes its nest in the burrow. It will run into its burrow to escape a predator. An armadillo lives by itself or with one other armadillo.

The giant armadillo is endangered. It really is giant! It can be up to forty inches long. The tail of the giant armadillo is about twenty inches long! The giant armadillo can weigh up to 130 pounds (up to 60 kilograms)! The giant armadillo only lives in South America.
