Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world. Buildings and statues built thousands of years ago are still there. Many people visit Athens every year. People love to visit the city and the ancient ruins of the Acropolis.

Athens is a very large city. People move from farms into the city to make more money. Most families live in small apartments. Sometimes several families share one apartment.

City blocks are crowded. Athens has very few parks. The city has many traffic jams and poor roads. This makes it very hard for the drivers.

Basketball is a favorite sport. Many of the Athens basketball teams have won championships.

Athens is famous for the Olympic Games. The modern Olympics began there in 1896. In 2004, Athens hosted the summer Olympic Games. The city had to make many improvements to get ready for these games.

The city of Athens celebrates Carnival each year in February or March. People sing and dance. Everyone enjoys special meals of meat and desserts. Easter is a special holiday for the people of Athens.
