Amsterdam is a city built on islands. The city has many canals. The canals are used just like streets. Boats carry goods on the canals.

Visitors love to sail in special glass topped boats and look at the city. Many people live in houseboats on the canals. Because of the danger of falling into the canals, parents teach their children to swim when they are very young.

There is much traffic in Amsterdam. The roads are crowded with cars, trucks and busses. Many people ride bikes to work and school. They get to ride their bikes in special lanes on the roads.

Amsterdam is a small city. Apartments are built close together. People get along well with each other. The people of Amsterdam use their beautiful parks for picnics and concerts. Tulips bloom in the city parks each spring. The Dutch people have many pet dogs and cats. These animals are welcome to enter stores and restaurants.

Amsterdam is famous for its art. The artist Rembrandt had a house in this city. Van Gogh has a special museum.
