Cassini-Huygens Mission
Topic(s):   Space Exploration

Saturn is the second largest planet in our solar system. Saturn is not solid like the earth. It is made of gas. It has seven rings and 18 moons. Titan is Saturn’s largest moon. Titan is made of rock.

Cassini-Huygens was a space mission to Saturn and Titan. It was launched in 1997. Many countries worked together on the mission. It performed 27 different kinds of studies. It had a spaceship, called Cassini, and a space probe, called Huygens. Cassini carried the probe.

Cassini, the spaceship, was very large. It was as big as a bus! It reached Saturn in 2004. Cassini studied Saturn, its rings and its moons. Huygens, the space probe, was much smaller. It studied the moon, Titan. Cassini flew around Saturn getting information. It spent four years orbiting the planet. Huygens was able to land on Titan. It landed on Titan in 2005. Cassini-Huygens came back to the earth in 2006.

Cassini and Huygens took many pictures and measurements. Cassini used a big antenna to send information back to earth. Scientists all over the world can study the data. They hope to learn more about how the solar system was formed.
