Before George Washington was President, he was a General in the Revolutionary War. He led the troops in the war against England. When George Washington won the war, the people formed a new country called the United States of America. Washington was called the father of our country.
Washington was elected as the first American President. He was president for two terms. Both times, he received all the votes. Washington began many traditions for all presidents to follow.
George Washington started the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court helped the people follow the Constitution, or laws, of the United States. Washington also created the first U.S. Cabinet. The members of the cabinet helped the president.
Washington did not want to be president for a third term. He did not think anyone should be president for too long. Washington was afraid that being president for too long would hurt the country.
George Washington was married to Martha. They had two children. Two years after stepping down as President, Washington caught a bad cold and died in 1799.
When Washington was president, five more states joined the new country. Many presidents have their pictures on money. Washington's face is on the quarter. It is also on the one-dollar bill. Washington's face is carved on Mt. Rushmore.
